Indonesia’s AI future now has a home address.

It’s Yogyakarta, to be specific. In July 2026, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) teamed up with telecom giant Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and chipmaker NVIDIA to launch something the country has never had before: a university-based AI research center. And as someone who spends her days explaining AI to people who don’t write code for a living, I think this story deserves more attention than it’s getting.

What Actually Happened

Let’s start with the basics. UGM, one of Indonesia’s most respected universities, announced the collaboration on July 27, 2026. The center runs on NVIDIA’s AI technology paired with Indosat’s GPU Merdeka platform, which supplies the raw computing muscle that modern AI research demands. The goal, according to the partners, is to build an applied research ecosystem for AI in Indonesia — meaning research that gets used in the real world, not just published in journals and forgotten.

Mardhani Riasetiawan, who heads UGM’s Digital Transformation Bureau, framed the collaboration as an effort to build AI infrastructure that is open, accessible, and sustainable. Those three words matter, and I’ll explain why in a moment.

Why a University, Though?

You might wonder why a chip company and a telecom operator would set up shop on a campus instead of building a shiny corporate lab. The answer is simple: talent.

AI isn’t really a hardware problem anymore. The chips exist. The models exist. A university-hosted center changes that math. Students and researchers get access to serious GPU infrastructure without needing a job at a big tech firm first. That’s how you grow homegrown talent instead of exporting it.

The stated commitment to sustainability suggests the partners know this. Whether the center produces meaningful applied research over the next several years will be the real test.

But the model itself — a first-of-its-kind national AI center anchored in a university rather than a corporate campus — is one I’d love to see repeated elsewhere. Countries that want a real seat at the AI table can’t just import the technology. They have to grow the people. Indonesia just took a concrete step toward doing exactly that, and it started in a classroom rather than a boardroom.

That’s a choice worth applauding.
