Picture yourself at your kitchen table on a Tuesday night. You ask an AI assistant to go through six months of messy spreadsheets, pull out every invoice that never got paid, draft the follow-up emails, and file them somewhere you will actually find them again. You close the laptop lid and go make tea. No monthly subscription meter ticking up in the background. No wondering which company’s servers just read your bank statements. The work happens on the machine sitting in front of you.
That scenario is the reason I paid attention when Apple introduced the M6 and M5 Ultra chips this year. Not because I get excited about silicon, honestly. I get excited about what silicon lets ordinary people do without asking permission from anybody.
What a chip has to do with AI agents
Quick refresher, because this site exists for people who did not sign up for a computer science degree. An AI agent is software that does not just answer you, it acts for you. It takes a goal, breaks it into steps, uses tools, and keeps going until the job is done or it gets stuck. Think less “chatbot that writes a poem” and more “assistant that actually books the thing.”
Agents are expensive to run compared to a single question and answer. One request to a chatbot is one round trip. An agent working through a task might make dozens or hundreds of those round trips, reading files, checking its own work, correcting course. That is why most agents today live in a data center somewhere and you rent access by the month.
The part of a chip that handles this kind of math is what Apple and everyone else call AI compute. More of it means bigger models fit on your device, and they respond faster. Apple says both new chips bring significant performance and AI compute improvements, and that the M5 Ultra is expected to roughly double the performance of the M5 Max. Doubling is the number worth sitting with. In agent terms, twice the throughput is not just a snappier experience. It is the difference between a task that finishes while you make tea and one you abandon halfway through because you got bored watching a spinner.
Why local matters more for agents than for chatbots
When you ask a cloud chatbot a question, you send it a question. When you hand an agent a real job, you often hand it your whole life. Your documents. Your email. Your client list. Your kid’s school forms. The privacy math changes completely once software is rummaging through your actual files instead of responding to a prompt you typed by hand.
Running that work on your own hardware sidesteps a whole category of worry:
- Your data does not leave the room, so there is no third party retention policy to read.
- No per-token billing, which means you can let an agent be thorough instead of rationing it.
- It works on a plane, in a basement, or on hotel wifi that barely loads a webpage.
- Nobody can change the pricing or deprecate the model out from under you next quarter.
None of that is new as an idea. Local AI has been possible for a while. What has been missing is enough headroom on normal consumer machines to run a capable model and still have your computer feel like a computer. That is the gap chips like these are aimed at.
The honest caveats
I am not going to oversell this. Two things keep me measured.
First, timing. Apple has not locked down exact release dates for either chip, and supply chain problems are the stated reason. Reporting around the Mac Studio and Mac Pro refreshes has been shifting for months, and the leaks themselves keep hedging between 2026 and 2027 for parts of the lineup. If you were planning a purchase around a specific date, do not.
Second, price and placement. Ultra-tier chips historically show up in desktops that cost real money. Most people reading agent101 are not buying a Mac Studio to run a personal assistant. But high-end silicon has a habit of trickling down. The capability that lands in an expensive desktop this year tends to land in a laptop a couple of generations later, and that laptop is the one that changes things for regular users.
What I would actually do with this information
Nothing urgent. Genuinely. This is a signal, not a shopping list.
The useful takeaway is directional. The industry spent the last few years assuming AI agents would be a service you subscribe to. Hardware moving this fast suggests a second path where the agent is just a program on your machine, the way a word processor is. Those two futures feel very different to live in, especially around cost and privacy.
So if you have been putting off learning how agents work because you assumed you would need a corporate account and a data center to use one, maybe reconsider. The version that runs on your desk is getting closer, and understanding what an agent is good at now will serve you well whenever the hardware catches up to the ambition.
